Everything you need to know before your kayak or paddle board adventure on the Dora Canal in Tavares, Florida. Can't find what you're looking for? Contact us and we'd be happy to help!
Adventure Outdoor Paddle is conveniently located on the waterfront in Downtown Tavares, Florida, with direct access to Lake Dora and the historic Dora Canal, part of the beautiful Harris Chain of Lakes.
Whether you choose a guided tour or a self-guided rental, you can expect a peaceful paddle through one of Central Florida's most scenic waterways. Glide beneath towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss while keeping an eye out for wildlife such as herons, osprey, turtles, limpkins, bald eagles, and even the occasional alligator.
Our guided tours include fascinating stories about the area's wildlife, ecology, and local history, while our rentals give you the freedom to explore the Dora Canal and surrounding lakes at your own pace. The route is suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, making it a great adventure for couples, families, solo travelers, and nature lovers.
Boat traffic on the Harris Chain of Lakes is typically lightest in the morning, especially during the warmer months. For the calmest water, cooler temperatures, and the best opportunity to spot wildlife, we recommend booking an early morning paddle whenever possible.
No experience is necessary! Our guided tours are designed to be relaxed, welcoming, and beginner friendly. Before every paddle, we'll show you the basics of paddling, review important safety information, and make sure you feel comfortable before heading out on the water.
The Dora Canal is known for its calm, protected waters, making it a wonderful place for first time kayakers and paddle boarders to build confidence. More experienced paddlers will also enjoy the area's beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere.
If you're booking a self guided rental and it's your first time paddling, don't worry. We'll provide the same basic instruction, recommend the best route based on current conditions, and answer any questions before you launch.
Our recommended paddle route through the Dora Canal is approximately 3 miles round trip, and most guests complete it in about 2 hours at a relaxed pace.
2 Hour Rental: Perfect for most guests who want to paddle the Dora Canal and return at a comfortable pace.
3 Hour Rental: Great if you'd like extra time to stop for photos, watch wildlife, or simply enjoy a more leisurely paddle.
4 Hour Rental: Ideal if you plan to paddle beyond the Dora Canal to Lake Eustis and stop at Fish Camp for lunch or a drink before returning.
If you're not sure which rental is right for you, don't worry. We'll be happy to recommend the best option based on your plans and current conditions on the water.
The Dora Canal is one of the best places in Central Florida to experience native wildlife from the water.
Depending on the season, you may spot great blue herons, anhingas, osprey, bald eagles, limpkins, ibis, egrets, turtles, fish, and even playful river otters if you're lucky. Small alligators are also common and are typically seen quietly basking along the shoreline.
Because the canal is lined with towering cypress trees and surrounded by natural wetlands, every paddle offers something different. Wildlife sightings change with the seasons, making each visit a unique experience.
Yes. Alligators are native to the Dora Canal and the Harris Chain of Lakes, and seeing one is a natural part of exploring Florida's waterways.
Adventure Outdoor Paddle is committed to helping guests safely enjoy these beautiful habitats while respecting the wildlife that calls them home. The vast majority of alligators prefer to avoid people and are most often seen quietly resting along the shoreline or slipping into the water as paddlers pass.
The key to safely sharing the water with wildlife is awareness and respect. We encourage all guests to stay aware of their surroundings, observe wildlife from a comfortable distance, and never attempt to approach, feed, or interact with an alligator. If you can take a close selfie with a gator, you're much too close.
Before every tour or rental, we'll review important safety guidelines and answer any questions you may have. Our experiences take place during daylight hours, when visibility is best and wildlife can be observed safely from your kayak or paddle board.
A few important reminders:
Always give alligators plenty of space.
Never feed or harass alligators or any other wildlife. Feeding wildlife is illegal in Florida and can cause animals to lose their natural fear of people.
Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid paddling too close to the shoreline where wildlife may be resting.
If you observe an alligator behaving unusually or posing a public safety concern, contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-392-4286.
Our goal isn't to avoid wildlife. It's to learn how to safely and responsibly share these beautiful waterways with it. By paddling with awareness and respect, we can all enjoy the beauty of wild Florida while helping protect it for future generations.
Yes! We operate from a public park in downtown Tavares, and launching on Lake Dora is free. You’re welcome to use the beach area we launch from. If you see us set up, feel free to stop by and say hello—we always enjoy meeting fellow paddlers and are happy to share route tips and local advice. On weekends, we also carry a small selection of paddling essentials and merchandise, including waterproof phone cases, dry bags, sunscreen, hats, and shirts in case you need something for your trip.
If winds are strong on Lake Dora, an excellent alternative launch is Summerall Park (1001 Wells Ave, Tavares), located near the entrance to the Dora Canal. From there, you can enjoy a scenic paddle through the canal toward Lake Eustis before turning around and returning to your launch point, often in calmer conditions.
Yes! We’re animal lovers, and well-behaved pets are welcome to join you on your paddle adventure. Because we operate from a public city park, pets are required to remain on a leash while on land, so be sure to bring one with you. For time on the water, we strongly recommend a properly fitted pet life vest. Even strong swimmers can tire, and a life vest makes it much easier to help your pet back onto a kayak or paddle board if needed. We also suggest bringing a water bowl and fresh water to keep your pet comfortable and hydrated in the Florida heat.
Yes, we offer private tours for special occasions, group events, corporate outings, and more. Contact us to discuss your specific needs and we'll work with you to create a customized paddle experience tailored to your group.
Our guided tours and self-guided rentals both explore the beautiful Dora Canal, but they offer two different experiences.
A guided tour is perfect if you'd like to learn about the area's unique wildlife, history, and ecology while paddling with an experienced local guide. Along the way, your guide will point out birds, turtles, alligators, native plants, and other hidden details you might otherwise miss. Guided tours are relaxed, beginner friendly, and a great choice for first time visitors who want a deeper appreciation of the Dora Canal.
A self-guided rental gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Before you launch, we'll provide a map, recommend the best route based on current conditions, and share local tips so you can make the most of your time on the water. Rentals are ideal for guests who enjoy exploring independently, taking photographs, fishing, or simply spending a peaceful morning on the water.
No matter which option you choose, you'll receive quality equipment, a safety briefing, and recommendations to help you have a safe and enjoyable paddle through one of Florida's most scenic waterways.
Morning is the best time to paddle the Dora Canal, especially during the warmer months.
Early morning paddles typically offer the calmest water, cooler temperatures, and the best opportunities to see wildlife. Birds are most active in the morning, and you'll often spot herons, osprey, limpkins, turtles, and other native wildlife before the day warms up.
Boat traffic on the Harris Chain of Lakes is also lighter earlier in the day, creating a quieter and more peaceful paddling experience. As the afternoon progresses, you'll generally encounter warmer temperatures, increased recreational boat traffic, and busier waterways, particularly on weekends and holidays.
If your schedule allows, we recommend launching between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM for the best overall experience. That said, every paddle offers its own unique beauty, and each season brings different wildlife and scenery to enjoy.
While we do not have a designated swimming area, we do not recommend swimming in the Dora Canal or Lake Dora.
The Dora Canal and Lake Dora are active waterways shared with boats, anglers, and wildlife, making them better suited for paddling than swimming.
If you're looking to cool off after your adventure, there is a free public splash pad just a short walk from Adventure Outdoor Paddle in Downtown Tavares that's open year round. It's a great option for families with young children.
Looking for a true swimming experience? We'd also be happy to recommend several nearby spring fed lakes and natural springs that are perfect for swimming and enjoying Florida's crystal-clear water.
We recommend bringing water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and comfortable clothing that can get a little wet.
Quick drying clothes, water shoes or sandals with a secure strap, and a waterproof bag for your phone or valuables are also great to have. If you're planning to take photos, don't forget your camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.
We provide your kayak or paddle board, paddle, and a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket. Before you launch, we'll also give you a safety briefing and local tips to help you make the most of your paddle.
During the summer months, we recommend bringing extra water and choosing a morning reservation whenever possible for cooler temperatures and calmer conditions.
For the safest and most enjoyable experience, our equipment has the following recommended weight limits:
Single Kayak: Up to 300 lbs
Tandem Kayak: Up to 450 lbs (combined weight)
Stand Up Paddle Board: Up to 210 lbs
These weight limits help ensure your kayak or paddle board performs properly and remains stable on the water. If you're unsure which option is the best fit for you or your group, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're happy to help you choose the right equipment for a comfortable and enjoyable paddle.
We understand that plans can change.
Cancel 24 hours or more before your reservation: Receive a full refund, minus non-refundable credit card processing fees.
Cancel less than 24 hours before your reservation or do not show up: No refund will be issued.
Weather cancellations: If we cancel due to unsafe weather, you'll have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.
For added flexibility, we highly recommend purchasing Trip Protection during checkout. Guests who add Trip Protection may cancel up to the start time of their activity and receive a full refund of their reservation, minus the non-refundable Trip Protection fee and any non-refundable credit card processing fees.
Your safety is our top priority. We closely monitor the weather, wind, and water conditions leading up to every tour and rental to ensure it's safe and enjoyable to paddle.
If high winds or other unsafe conditions are expected, we'll contact you as soon as possible. In many cases, we can adjust your launch location or reschedule your reservation so you can still enjoy your time on the water.
If we determine that conditions are unsafe and no alternative works for your schedule, you'll receive a full refund.
Please keep in mind that Florida weather can change quickly. A forecast showing rain doesn't always mean your paddle will be canceled. We make weather decisions based on real time conditions, not the forecast alone, and will always communicate with you if your reservation may be affected.
